Paris, France at the start of the twenty-first century: dark with fog, riots over police killings, and Far Right demagogues, frightening the confused.

Here dogged state criminal investigator Stanislas Cassel works at the Palace of Justice.  He is a grandson of a French propagandist for the Nazis during their World War II Occupation.  Ashamed of his family's infamy, he avoids anything political.  Instead he absorbs himself solving small crimes, which he calls his Little Miseries.

Two San Diego defense contractor executives with top secret clearances are murdered and their passports stolen, while on a business trip to Paris, France. Pablo de Silva, a young CIA agent, is offered a mission by his Agency mentor: liaise with a FBI agent in that California city to see if terrorists killed the two Americans.

On a previous assignment, de Silva witnessed his lover and and fellow agent 
murdered.  Now disillusioned with spying, he wants to resign.  However, his mentor has helped him through several personal difficulties.  De Silva feels a debt is a debt, and he accepts.      

At first the assignment appears simple and not threatening. Yet the longer he works it, the more uneasy he becomes, and he starts to ask some unsettling questions that make him take drastic action.

There are letter bombs.
There are car bombs.

Could there also be a file bomb, a distant relative to the above, so horrifying in its content that an unintended recipient dies, in this case, suffering a fatal heart attack?

The south of France, near midnight.

A man, accompanied by  bodyguards, has flown in from London, bearing bad news.  The news is for a buddy, a very ex-intelligence agent, hiding out in an ancient farmhouse.  A dear old London friend, he tells his buddy, has suffered an odd cardiac arrest and died. To compound the mystery, this man spotted, just before their old friend died, three men enter his flat.  Two of the men, he could identify as being high up in British intelligence; the third, he couldn't place.  Minutes later, presumably after their old dear friend had passed away, those three rushed out of his flat and disappeared into the London night.

So sets in motion with this strange night tale the soon-to-be-released thriller, DARKNESS AND BLOOD that reveals why a file bomb can be just as deadly as a car or letter bomb.
